Every project has a story, and The Brookline began with a request that pushed the limits of what most builders would even consider. Our clients envisioned an expansive main living space—an open-concept kitchen, dining, and gathering area—spanning an uninterrupted 24 feet with no columns or support walls.
In most locations, that might be ambitious. In New England, it’s a structural feat. Heavy, wet snow loads are part of every builder’s reality, and a roof must withstand that weight for months at a time. Designing such a wide-open space without compromising safety was the ultimate engineering challenge.
Solving the Structural Puzzle
Rather than scaling back the vision, our design team embraced it. Their solution was to stagger the roof peak, which allowed us to utilize two massive timber plates layered together for exceptional strength. The approach provided the structural integrity required—yet also created something unexpected: a perfect clerestory for a row of windows high above the living space.
What began as a solution to a structural dilemma became one of the home’s defining architectural features. Those elevated windows flood the interior with natural light, adding warmth and drama to the expansive space.
Where Rustic Meets Modern
This marriage of necessity and beauty set the tone for the rest of the design. The Brookline blends the rugged textures of stone and exposed timber with the clean lines of a contemporary roofline and a state-of-the-art kitchen. The result is a space that feels at once like a modern gallery and a classic mountain lodge.
Despite its openness and abundance of glass, the home is exceptionally efficient. Thick insulated panels and triple-pane windows create a thermal envelope that keeps the interior comfortable while reducing energy costs—even during the harshest New England winters.
An Encore Collaboration
The story didn’t end when the home was complete. A year later, the homeowners invited us back to design and build a covered porch and outdoor kitchen. This addition transformed the property into a true four-season retreat, perfect for summer entertaining and year-round enjoyment.
Built on Trust and Referrals
Perhaps the most meaningful part of this project is how it began: with a simple referral from a past client. Knowing that our work inspires homeowners to recommend us to friends is the highest compliment we can receive.
The Brookline reflects everything we love about timber frame building—tackling complex challenges, discovering creative solutions, and delivering spaces that feel both enduring and inspired. It’s a home that showcases what happens when vision, craftsmanship, and trust come together.
